Increasing Life's Balance

  • Where is everyone in a rush to get to? Uh….it should be only to places that are helping you to better your life or those around you. There are several distractions in life that get us to forget about intentional pauses. There is an overwhelming amount of social media feeds, capital demands and social change which may lead to feeling like bettering yourself or others is an action of the past. However, intentional pauses can alleviate the day to day pressures to unlock your mind and relax your body into a place of visualizing the opportunities and taking action to be a part of what makes you and those around you better. Remember to change the world, only requires each of us to make a difference everyday from a smile to forward movment.

Remember the pandemic had us in a freenzy that is still lingering. We were stuck in the mode of defining “essential movement” which distracted from the core essentials such as—grocery shopping to try new recipes, going for walks, exercising outside, socializing with others, meeting new people, exploring ideas that were dormant in the back of our minds, and intentionally creating time to be with our selves for spiritual grounding, growth and study.

How amazing does it sound to create time for you within each day that is not based on a mandate or a role that you play for others. Pausing is a time to stop the noise which is essential for you to not get lost in the age of information, data, AI and regular life in your community as you go about your daily routines. Throughout the daily take time to digest interactions, conversations, and activities in small increments of 1 to 5 minutes so that you can reset. If you want some exercises or meditations for resetting, you can read–Letters of Devotion which as a powerful reset meditative prayer. You can also take deep breathes slowing while setting intentions for understanding and self revelation.

When pausing, it will be difficult at first, especially if you are a giver or a workaholic. For others, it may be easier if your life style is one that is focused on you already but filled with tasks after tasks or multiple activities. Parents and Caregivers may find it challenging to step away from those we love for a moment. BUT TRUST, EVERYONE WILL BE BETTER FOR YOU PAUSING!!!

    TO PAUSE, TRY THESE TECHNIQUES:

    1. Listen to a playlist of instrumentals (no words)–find any genre you like but remember there are no words being spoken or sung.
    2. Journal through writing, typing or speaking into one space (notebook/app) that you can refer back to afterwards.
    3. Complete a puzzle
    4. Indulge in an activity or hobby
    5. Schedule at least 30 minutes each day where you are not talking to anyone, performing tasks, fulfilling duties, or doing anything except for being with you. You should create a title for your special time that stands out.
    6. Place this time in your calendar and set an alarm that goes off at least 15 minutes so that you are not overwhelmed by rushing which allows you to conclude whatever may be happening that day.
    7. Note that the 30 minutes does not have to be at the same time each day.
    8. As you get accustomed to this pause begin to expand the time by 10 minute increments.
    9. The goal is 1 hour per day at least.
    10. If you would like to push yourself, in addition to the major daily pause schedule 1 day per week that is just for you and your desires. This can be a day of activities, hobbies, building, learning, rest, exploration, nature walks, a movie along with at least 30 minutes to 1 hour of silence without distractions.

When pausing you are stopping yourself from indulging in the regular pattern of “doing” just to get the job done, and that job includes formal work all the way down to the tasks that you assign yourself to maintain your life. You are not a robot who can continuously function in noise. You are an individual with emotions, spirit, thought and so many dynamic aspects that you need to pause just to be you with you.

Let’s enjoy intentionally pausing in time as we learn how to relate to ourselves and others on deeper levels. The relationships that we have in our lives are now something that we can actually examine and feel the impact. This includes our relationships with food, habits, laughter, inner-thoughts, daily routines, and spiritual beliefs. Pausing is an act of self love and essential for your health both physically and mentally. You will be surprised at how much better you begin to feel whether you are active person or in remission from a disease and dis-ease. You are worthy of your own time.

With great love and deep fondness,

    Dr. Acquilla Faye

  • As the world continues to face the changes that have arisen since COVID-19 many are faced with realities that they once ignored.

The pressure is rising as families are adjusting to the new norms of society. The way that we go to work has changed as many employees are now completing tasks from home via their phones and computers. Families are now staying home which means structure, education, meals, exercise and recreation for children is no longer the responsibility of the school or outside entities. Socialization for adults has changed as the churches are no longer holding services, bars and clubs are closed, salons and barbershops are closed, and restaurants are restricted.

Welcome to the new normal, where we all have the opportunity to reset our lives without the distractions of outside influences. The pressures that many are experiencing is coming from the abundance of information blended with a drastic change in daily activities without any preparation. Change has a different impact on all individuals. Being able to adjust with change has positive mental, spiritual, emotional and physical benefits. The mind is able to create solutions more quickly, beliefs intensify, feelings stabilize, and the body optimizes. You become a healthier person because you don’t find change, rather you adjust and improve.

Think of a life changing moment that modified your daily routines. Now as you think about this moment, take note of some of the newness that you experienced which brought laughter and joy despite the challenges. Think about how you adjusted to the new norm in that moment and how much you learned, grew, and strengthened. Remember how you had to give yourself time to process the changes and then create a new plan of action for handling your responsibilities. And you did a great job because you are here right now breathing and reading this article as you reflect on that one moment.

Whether alone, with family, or having younger children in the household there is no restriction on creating new norms for your personal household. Creating newness keeps life fresh, exciting and eases anxiety. Start by doing one new activity this week such as a new food, creating a schedule, playing a game, or learning a new skill.

During this time of shifting, it is important to remind ourselves that we have experienced changes before in our lives. We have to remember that we can still go outside for a walk, hike and other exercises either alone or with others. There is not a rule that says we can not play board games, cook meals, watch a new film, or enjoy conversations with others. This means that there are a plethora of activities that we can still enjoy and build into our new norm.

    Love, Light and Peace,

    Dr. Acquilla Faye,

Remember to breathe. Intentional breathing brings about calmness and increased focus.

  • Where is everyone in a rush to get to? Uh….it should be only to places that are helping me to better my life. This is what we call essential—grocery shopping to try new recipes, go for walks and exercising outside, only going to places that are important. Having time to be with yourself and family or to create a new structure for your life. How amazing is this time as we enter into Spring. Now we not only can clear things from our homes, we can clean our minds, bodies and souls. It is a time to clean the clutter from all areas of life.

Let’s enjoy this pause in time as we learn how to relate to ourselves and others on deeper levels. The relationships that we have in our lives is now something that we can actually examine and feel the impact. This includes our relationships with food, habits, laughter, inner-thoughts, daily routines, and spiritual beliefs.

North Carolina has now been under a “Stay-at-Home” order since mid-March and we are entering May. The spring has entered the land while we are requested to stay at home, unless of course you are leaving something “essential”. At this time, there are several people who are experiencing hardships while others are living a fairly normal life. Normal life meaning they are adjusting to the times whether that entails restructuring their work habits, modifying workout regiments, enjoying meals at home, and continuing individual self-care and spiritual practices.

There are multiple messages circulating as it relates to the pandemic. Most of which causes anxiety and fear. Both emotions can be toxic to one’s overall health. This is why it is important to ensure that we are taking care of ourselves mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually on a daily base.

While at home, enjoy being able to rest more and learn how to reconnect and repair relationships. The amazing part is that by enjoying resting at home, you can actually meet more people by calling the numbers in your phone—bet there are a few that have not been contacted in a while. Imagine the relationships strengthening with people who you have met but somehow could never get together in person due to schedules, locations, or obligations.

Reachout to people and have genuine conversations. You will be pleasantly surprised by what you learn about yourself and others. You will also strengthen your conversation and listening skills in the proces. We can always get better with relationships. And with technology, we can have text, calls and video chats. It is truly time to reset as we watch our relationships shift.
